Safety
- Follow good sanitation habits. We don’t want anyone to get sick.
- Learn how to use knives and tools properly. We don’t anyone to take an eye out or lose the tip of their finger in a swordfight with your line cook, Josh!
- Keep your work area clean. Staying organized and prepared in the kitchen will reduce the chance that you will hurt yourself or others in the kitchen. It will also guarantee the success of your recipe.
- Wear closed-toed shoes. If something like a heavy pot or knife falls, you will want your little piggies to be protected.
- Keep your cleaning chemicals in a safe place away from your food, pets, and young kids.
- Have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen. This should be suitable for paper, grease and electrical fires. Do not throw water on a grease fire, use baking soda to smother the flames.
- Use the proper tool for the job. Do not use a hatchet to cut lemons!
- Use communication in the kitchen when working with other people. Always announce yourself when moving hot food or walking behind someone.
- Clean up spills right away so no one slips. Slipping is bad, M’kay!
- Always assume that the handle of a pot or pan is hot. Use a dry kitchen towel or hot mitt when grabbing for handles and trays.
- Flames and steam will cause bad burns. Make sure your body parts are kept away from both.
- Keep a first aid kit in the kitchen so you can care for any injuries ASAP.
